Hello all

I'm having a field day trying to export in an animation codec I need for my Kinemac
animations, to have a transparent background for importing into Final Cut.

My plan with Kinemac is to create several ( 150+/- depending on the project) short animations and, import them all into Final Cut for the finishing touches such as motion graphic backgrounds. superimposing so forth and so on .....
I've gone to my inspector window and, set the background color to none, I get the checker board on the stage but, when I export my .mov the transparency is lost and, replaced with a black background. I have also tried the Apple Intermediate codec and, uncompressed at no avail.

I'm also having a hard time exporting and , getting a good clean export. let me explain...
I took my 16 second tester animation and added a .mov background, exported in 720x480 NTSC, when I view this animation in QT it looks pixelated on the edges of the still. when I take this same Kinemac animation and, import and export from Mpeg streamclip as DV 720x480 NTSC the clip looks perfect.

Thanks in advance for any help you may have to offer ..

Use the Animation Codec and make sure it's set for Millions of Colors+.
The "plus" is what gives you the alpha channel

Thanks, I'm not sure how I over looked the obvious...
Now I just need to find a way, to get Kinemac and Final Cut to play well together. When I import my animation into FC it looks awful and I'm not sure why.

Dude.
When you go to send to film - open settings which is near the bottom of the page.
There you can pick your:
Quality (Use Best).
Compression (use Animation )
Plus there's Frames Per Second (use 60 fps) and - if needed, use the Motion Blur scale.
I hope this helps.

Still looks bad ,
I turned up my FPS from 29.97 to 60 FPS
I went heavy on the motion blue and, cranked it up to 32 just to see if it would resolve the issue, the edges still look bad, when the still is pitched at an angle it has the steps look if that makes sense.

This is going to drive me nutty ..

Am I understanding that you're building a slideshow/movie in Finalcut and layering the Kinemac animation on top?
If so, what are your Sequence settings in Finalcut? (Select the Sequence in the browser window and then command zero)

That would be correct

what are your Sequence settings in Finalcut?

In Render Control
Renders and Playback
Both Filters and Frame blending for speed are checked

In Render
Both Frame rate and resolution are set to 100%

Thanks for the help ..

(I have Finalcut Studio2 but I believe these settings would be in the same place.)
In the main toolbar go to "Sequence" and then drop down to "settings".(If "settings" is grayed out, select your sequence in the browser window or the timeline and then try again.

You should then see a General tab with Quicktime Video settings. What's showing as your compressor settings there?

Thanks again for the reply
I'm working on FCE 4 ,

This tab is not showing, One would think it would but ..
Nevertheless I went to item properties from my timeline, in the item properties > Format > Compressor is animation.

Thanks again

I must say I just don"t get it.

I thought I would take this same clip, add a gradient background and export in 720x480 NTSC , its very rough around the edges the same as all the others had been. Yet the most perplexing part is, I'll take this very same animation I exported from Kinemac , open with MpegStreamClip and, export this clip in the exact same codec and it looks 100% better...

It has me perplexed also. My thought is, is that your clip is okay, especially since it exports okay in Streamclip.
With FCP though, because the sequence has its own properties, the clip is being converted there and causing you the problems.

A couple more things to check.

1) in the browser bin see if you can right click on the "sequence" there and check the item properties for that.

2) Is the clip looking rough in the viewer before you export?

3) is it the Kinetic animation edges that look rough or the whole gradient outside edge?

4) Does the timeline need to be rendered before you can play it?

Oh and ...
5) What codec are you using to export outof Streamclip?

When I export from Kinemac and play the animation in QT , its rough but, when I export from Streamclip
its like Streamclip cleaned it up. it looks 100% better.

1) in the browser bin see if you can right click on the "sequence" there and check the item properties for that.
Now that I added the gradient I'm exporting in 720x480 NTSC , in the properties the compressor is DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.

2) Is the clip looking rough in the viewer before you export?
Yes indeed , As I said even in QT when I view it , it looks rough unless I export from Streamclip..

3) is it the Kinetic animation edges that look rough or the whole gradient outside edge?
Its just the Kinemac animation.

4) Does the timeline need to be rendered before you can play it?
No

5) What codec are you using to export outof Streamclip?

Export to DV > DV ( DV25 ) NTSC , 720x480 ,29.97 FPS

Thanks again

hmmm...Okay. Let's back up a minute. When you export from Kinemac do you use these settings?
Compression Type= Animation
Frames per second 60
Keyframe every 30 frames
Compressor/Depth=millions of colors+
Quality=Best
and your exporting with "none" as your background so it shows as checkerboard as you're exporting.

My animation with these settings looks clean in Quicktime.

I think I might have just found something though.
Even though the above settings should be giving you a straight alpha channel, FCP seems to be interpreting it as black.

I'm seeing the rough edge in the viewer now.

Hopefully you will have this same menu:
click on the Kinemac animation on your FCP timeline and in the toolbar go to Modify/Alpha Type/Black
and see if that cleans it up. It does for me.

Ok, we are 50% there ...
I added the Keyframes every 30 frames , now its clean in QT.
However my animation still looks rough in FCE

This was an interesting test ..
I took one of Kinemac examples from the gallery ( 10 Screens animation ) and, exported to 720x480 NTSC 29 FPS.
When I viewed this in QT it looked bad however , when I export this .mov from Streamclip its perfect ..
