When I switch to spot mode on a light source lines appear on the screen that show the spot shape, pattern, direction etc. When I render they are still there. How can stay in spot mode and remove the markers or grid lines???

Go to the Inspector:Static Lights panel.
Click on an empty row of the lights list to deselect the light.
Done.

To hide the 3D grid of the whole space, press the "g" key.
